This historic proclamation was issued by George Washington during his first year as President. It sets aside Thursday, November 26 as "A Day of Publick Thanksgiving and Prayer."
Signed by Washington on October 3, 1789 and entitled "General Thanksgiving," the decree appointed the day "to be observed by acknowledging with grateful hearts the many and signal favors of Almighty God."
While there were Thanksgiving observances in America both before and after Washington's proclamation, this represents the first to be so designated by the new national government.

I have decided I better spotlight more then one at a time or I will not get everyone promoted until after the New Year!

SS from SS Woodcraft is an amazing wood craftsman and has the perfect gifts for kids and grand kids and adults (see the earrings below)!

"My Dad was a master carpenter and cabinet maker, who taught me all I know about woodworking. I spent over 40 years working with wood, as a hobbyist, carpenter, cabinet maker, and independent remodeling contractor. You might say I've got sawdust in my blood. (My wife says it's in my socks). I am no longer able to do any heavy work, but I'm sure having fun designing and making my line of toys and smaller items. My favorite pass time is making realistic toy tools and appliances for the little ones. Another item that is very popular is my line of walking canes. I have three different handgun shaped designs and now I have to carry extra canes in my car because people want to buy the one I'm using out from under me. Thanks again for dropping by. Irena at Ginger's Garden is another amazing person that is a Licensed Esthetician and Certified Aromatherapist! I can smell the wonderful aromas in her studio!

She says:

"I was born in Prague, Czech Republic. I am a third generation Aromatherapist, herbalist, soapmaker & skin care manufacturer. As a child I remember grandma making soap outside in a big kettle over an open fire. The lye was made by pouring ashes over rain water which my grandma collected during the rainy season. When she had enough lye, she would suspend an egg to see if the lye was strong enough. If the egg sank, the lye was too strong. If the egg just barely floated on the top of the water, the lye wasn't strong enough. But, if the egg submerged just half way, the lye was just right. She collected grease drippings in the kitchen in an empty coffee can. This soap was mostly used to wash laundry and dirty dishes. Our clothes were washed in a tin tub with a wooden washboard.

I am following in their footsteps. Nowadays we have it easy. Different types of oils, butters, pre-made lye or fragrant oils are more readily available. I still think of magic when I make lotion with yellow or green oils & it comes out white, or when my soap comes to trace, so I can pour it in my mold."

Blogfire Blitz from Homespun Alley to Cozy Stitches

I promised to be part of the Blogfire Blitz and share something from my shop and then introduce another artisan on Artfire.

So I want to share my muslin ribbons:

These are made from unbleached muslin and have that wonderful 'country' look. Some are stamped and some are painted with fabric inks. They are 100% cotton and can be reused and are washable.

I am working on making fabric wrapping from muslin and from lovely scarves and fabrics I have collected from estate and garage sales. These fabric wraps will be in all sizes from 16" up to 48" and can be used for all your gift giving. Fabric wrapping is so eco-friendly, reusable and will bless the socks of your gift recipient! So stay tuned and I will have some listed soon.

Connie says: "I have an insatiable passion for making jewelry and creating pieces that are professionally constructed. Fabric Wrapping

Bojagi or bobo wrap originated in Korea. One sources says in the eighth century and another source says in the eleventh century. Women sewed left over scraps of fabric from making clothes to create beautiful quilt-like scarfs. These scarfs were used wrap, store, cover and transport all the things essential to everyday life.

Below is a video for wrapping a gift. This one is called a Lotus Wrap.

Furoshiki originated in Japan as early as 1603: furo means "bath" and shiki means "to spread". Furoshiki were used to carry toiletries and clothing to the bathhouses and were placed on the floor to act as bathmats.

When cotton was introduced into Japan, furoshiki began to be used to carry "goods for sale" along with their belongings.

With the advance in textile production furoshiki became mass produced and the Japanese would wrap gifts and the receipent would also keep the fabric wrapping cloth to reuse for personal use or to pass on by wrapping another gift and presenting it.

With the concern on 'green' and 'eco-friendly' and the desire to eliminating some of the plastic in our world furoshiki is the ideal solution.

This is an excellent way to recycle fabric and make some truly lovely pieces of "fabric wrapping".

All types of fabrics can be used: silk scarves, rayon and polyester blends, cottons, muslin (ideal for heavier items such as glass and books).

The fabric wrap is always a square and can come in most any size from 14" up to 48". The Japanese even make a fabric wrap large enough to 'wrap' a futon!

I love to go to garage and estate sales and collect every piece of lace, crochet, linen, embroidery and vintage fabric I can find.

I have quite a collection of mint pieces and lots of scrap pieces. So I decided it is time to start sewing projects with these lovely pieces.

The first item I listed recently is an embroidered linen collar made from a table scarf.

I cut the shape desired and bound the edge with bias tape then added a satin ribbon for the closure. It real is a lovely piece.

The second item I listed is a gorgeous vintage crocheted collar I found at an estate sale.

I don't know why the second picture came out pinkish. The first picture shows the actual ecru color. I only had to add a lovely button and stretch loop closure to complete this beauty!

I am in the design phase for a purse/bag with vintage scraps pieced together.

As a side note, don't forget that today is Constitution Day! Honor our Constitution and if you want copies I will mail you one for free!

What Are You Working On This Week?

I recently finished two items for my Artfire shop, Homespun Alley,

We recently dropped our land line and are using our cell phones to help cut cost since my son-in-law lost his job. I found it really frustrating trying to carry my cell phone from room to room along with both hands full of other items (putting clothes away, carrying a drink and books to my bedroom, etc) so I decided to design and sew a Smartphone/IPhone Necklace/Pendant to hold the phone while carrying other items.

I decided to make this a made-to-order or custom item in my shop. I can change the size to fit your phone and use the same material or you can let me know your color choices and I can offer pictures of sample fabrics for you to chose from.

The "strap" on my pendant is a thin satin cord but I can make it with a wider strap of different type fabric if you prefer.

My phone weights 5 oz so I wanted fabric and strap to be as lightweight as possible so I made this one from a lightweight olive green fabric called Green Rose Crinkle Tissue (a yard of this fabric retails for $24.99, but I got it on sale). The lining is an olive green rayon with interfacing to give just the right sturdiness.

My second finished item is a repurposed Canvas Purse/Clutch that I found at an estate sale.

I added gold colored grommets on each side and put a narrow leopard-look silk scrap through the grommets and tied them to make the strap.

The strap can be pulled into the bag when using as a wallet so the strap is inside and not on the outside.

As you can see the zippered webbing pocket can hold a Smartphone/IPhone or other items of your choice. The zippered pocket just above the phone pocket has it's depth to the bottom of the webbed section. The main zipper at the very top has a depth of 8 1/4". Fully open it measures 8 1/4" x 6 3/4".

On the back I added gold colored magnetic snaps so you can snap together and have a wallet that fits inside a larger purse.

You can leave the strap out and carry or pull and stuff inside for a hand clutch. This is a very versatile purse/wallet/clutch.

Arizona, It's A Dry Heat!

Just got back from Arizona where the temperature was 115 degrees up to 121. Yes, it is a dry heat, no humidity.

I was always told that a dry heat did not feel as hot as a humid heat.

I was in Arizona for 3 days and my body is a total wreck! It was so miserably hot that I got heat exhaustion and dehydrated even though I was drinking lots of water and had access to a swimming pool. Then the time change from Texas to Arizona is two hours so when my body was ready to go to bed everyone there was ready for dinner! I would wake up at 7 or 7:30am Texas time and everyone else was still asleep because it was 5 or 5:30am.

We were in the Phoenix, Arizona area where all the subdivisions had rock yards, no grass to be seen anywhere. The folks we stayed with had a patch of grass in the backyard about 5 x 10 and actually paid a gardener $35 to take care of it along with one yucca and two dying palms!

The shopping strips had "misters" all around the top canopies over the entry doors trying to put moisture into the air. It was so hot that the mist never reached my glasses (I am only 5" 2") as it would evaporate before it could reach the concrete walkways.

The most beautiful area was close to the New Mexico border where all the rocks on hills and mountains are perched at amazing angles, looking like they will fall any moment but don't! It looks just like in the cartoon for the Roadrunner and Wile Coyote! The rocks or I should say boulders look like you could blow on them and they would tumble down! It is truly an amazing sight!

I am very, very happy to be home in humid Texas!

Hallelujah! At least one of the wicked witches is dead! Osama Bin Laden is dead. Many thanks and prayers to our mighty military for this accomplishment.

Now they need to have a military trial for Khalid Sheikh Mohammed who is still sitting in Gitmo and send him to join Osama.

I don't know how our military managed to get Osama since the Obama administration has been saying there are no Islamic terrorist and even tried to get people to stop using the word "Islamic terrorist".

Thanks again to our wonderful military who risks their lives daily to protect the few freedoms we have left.

I belong to several groups that share health information and where to purchase the best products for the best price.

I live in the San Antonio, Texas area and belong to a group called Real Food SA and we do group buys from all over the USA.

Anyone can start a buying opportunity if you know a company that will offer wholesale and/or free shipping for bulk buys.

Briden Wilson Farms

We sent a message to the group listing the price per pound or item, depending on what you are purchasing, then we set up a database for folks to list their name, phone, email, items wanted, payment (usually we use Paypal, personal, so no fee is charged). Set a time the offer will close and make sure you have collected everyone's payment and have a way to contact them. Then you place the order with the company and have it shipped to you.

Depending on what you order you handle the sorting of items and letting everyone know when and where to pickup their orders. If it is a really large order and you need help, ask for volunteers to come over and help you sort. I have done both, myself and asked for help. Usually when one person handles it all they charge a $1 or two hosting fee per order. Sometimes you have to buy ziplock bags or containers in order to divide items and you need to charge enough to cover your cost.

One lady did a bulk buy for grains and got orders for 16,000 pounds of wheat, spelt, flax and other grains to grind for breads. Now that was one large order!

I hosted orders for unpasteurized almonds and ordered over 180 pounds. And for sprouted trail mix and nuts and both were very successful.

This is a great way to buy the products you want and save by buying in bulk.

The Gifted Blog is a must visit blog! Charissa is truly 'gifted' and offers some amazing gift wrapping ideas!

I truly enjoyed her series called Furoshiki Week.

Charissa writes, "Furoshiki are Japanese wrapping cloths. Literally translated, furoshiki means "bath spread". They are thought to have originated in the Edo period, when patrons visiting the public bath would bundle their belongings in a square cloth while enjoying a nice soak."

She shows how to wrap, tie and decorate just about any shape using everything from vintage scarves, napkins, fabrics and of course papers.

Have You Ever Served on A Jury?

Have you ever served on a jury? I had to appear in court last Thursday as part of a jury pool. We had to be there by 8am downtown in a very large city in our county. We live in a small community over 30 miles away.

I had not driven downtown in over 10 years and never drive at night anymore. Well, it was still dark when I left home and it did not get light until I was downtown looking for the parking garage. Needless to say I was very tense and nervous being unfamiliar with the route and figuring out the one way streets and getting there on time.

I am over 65 and have anxiety attacks when under stress which causes pain in my chest and stomach with weakness in both arms and then I break out into a sweat. There is no warning when one will happen. The pills the doctor gave me work well but takes from 15 minutes to 2 hours to calm everything down.

As I got cut off and missed the exit from the freeway I got an attack and had to stop and park at the next exit to take a pill and calm down. This is why I called it an ordeal.

Sitting around in the jury pool room waiting to be assigned to a particular court is not a problem as I always take a book with me to read.

Finally 60 of us were selected out of 100's for a criminal court and we were sent to another floor. More waiting in the hallway for the Judge to call us in.

Finally we were told the 'good' news and the 'bad' news. We could go home but had to be back the next morning. I tried to find out if I could be excused because our family only have two vehicles, my and my daughter/hubbys, which he uses to be at work by 6am. My daughter had an appointed scheduled for 9:30am on Friday and wanted me with her since she was seeing a specialist in blood diseases. But they would not excuse me because of that.

But I do thank God it was for 11am and not 8am!

So Friday I got there okay but had an attack as I was entering the courthouse (20 minutes early). So I took a pill and just sat and waited to calm down. We again waited in the hallway for the Judge to call us in. Finally got called in and was told by the Judge that we would all break for an hour lunch after her speech to welcome us and explain that this was a child molestation case.

I am also hard of hearing and thought she was using the molestation case as an example of the type of cases her court handled. Well, at lunch one the other ladies in the jury pool explained what the case would be about.

Now I am again upset because I had been abused as a child and really did not want to explain that or deal with this case at all.

We go back to the court room and was told we should be finished by 4 or 5pm. We sat through the prosecutions questions and speech and then the accuser's lawyers questions and speech.

They do not question each person, they just ask you to raise your hand if you have an opinion about any thing they brought up. We were told that if we did not offer an opinion then we would be picked to sit on the jury because they had no wait to know what we thought and nothing to base elimination on.

They asked if anyone had ever served on a criminal jury before and about 5 of us had. I served on a murder case in south Texas many years ago and we found the person guilt.

We were also told that if we had "excuses or reasons" we believed would eliminate us from servicing to raise your hand, which I did along with about 20 others of the 60. They took our numbers, which we were given when we lined up to enter the court, and told us if we needed to explain in private with the Judge to raise your hands, which about 10 of us did. Then they tried to get people to explain in front of everyone and I along with the other 9 or so had to keep repeating that we wished a private talk.

One man older then me was almost in tears with a shaky voice, explained he had a daughter molested but would not discuss it further in front of everyone.

Finally at 4:30 we were given a 20 minute break. Then 30 minutes later we go back in and listen to the Judge explain how her court would work and what our responsibilities would be as a juror. Then they ask everyone to leave except the 10 or so of us who wished to speak privately. They allowed each person to step up to the Judge's bench with lawyers on one side and prosecutors on the other side to hear why you think you should be excused. Since I was #47 I was the next to last person to talk with the Judge.

After explaining why I did not want to service they just said thank you and sent me out with the others. We again wait in the hallway while they decide who the 12 will be, calling two different people back in for more questions.

Finally at 10 minutes to 6pm they called us all back in and read the names of those chosen to serve and finally released the rest of us.

I truly think it was cruel making those folks, including me, sit through all that before releasing us. I was so shocked at how many people have had to deal with child molestation and rape, either themselves or a close relative. There were at least 3 other people there that broke down and cried when talking privately with Judge.

I really think they should ask people up front and deal with eliminating them right away instead of putting them through such an emotional wringer.

I do think everyone should serve on a jury at least once in their lifetime but I pray you never have to sit on one that involves a molested or murdered child.

Got Me For Jury Duty!

My county got me for jury duty, so will get back to posting as soon as I am done with this "ordeal".

Maybe I will be able to write more calmly when it is over. It truly has been an ordeal for me, even though I believe everyone should serve at least once in their lifetime on a jury.

I am not feeling very creative this morning. So HELP! Give me something to spark my interest! From handmade to healthy food, whatever is on your agenda this week.

I spent the weekend making yogurt and started my cream cheese (we will see how that turns out!), and some chicken broth to freeze for soups.

So far I have lost over 10 lbs in a couple of weeks just by dropping store bought breads from my diet, eating more vegs and fruits and juices. I haven't even started the GAPS diet yet. Ordered the book and anxiously awaiting it's arrival.

I want to learn how to do canning so welcome all links to helpful sites.

Another busy week and got very little accomplished in the sewing or handmade department.

I have to change my diet and have been working on making homemade foods instead of processed. I got a Jack LaLanne Juicer and love it! Made my own V8 juice and lots of fruit juices and it is amazing how much better it taste then store bought! Did you know that all the juices in the store are mostly sugar and the fruits/vegs have been so processed that there is no nutritional value left in them?

I made some yogurt and added my own fresh fruit, wow! is so easy to make and taste so yummy.

I am looking into the GAPS diet and would love to hear from anyone who has experience with it (or a used copy of the book!).

What are you working on this weekend?

I have been under the weather this past week and have not gotten must done, so today I will be mostly running errands. I may get a little time later today to work on one of the many projects I have started, two purses, a BJD carrying case, and revamping a shirt I love that has some small holes in it.

This weekend is also the 175th anniversary of the Battle of the Alamo. There will be reenactments and celebrations all over the downtown area of San Antonio. I personally can not attend but recommend it for a wonderful outing for your children to learn some history of our great state of Texas. My son-in-law is taking my two grand daughters to visit.

Okay, I need some help with a project. I purchased a handmade fabric doll from a garage sale and can't find anything like her to determine true age etc.

I think she was made during the Cabbage Patch craze but not sure. The lady who sold it said her Mother had owned it for many, many years but had no further details about it.

I want to redo the hair, obviously.

The hair is rooted but in very bad shape

I think they did a good job on the feet heels, backside and hands

Anyone know anything about the maker of this doll?

Now we charge and exhort such persons in the Lord Jesus Christ that they work in quietness and earn their own food and other necessities.

God never tells us to work hard all our life and then give to those who are not willing to work hard, nor does He say the government has the right to take what your hands have worked hard for and redistribute it.

God wants us to freely give. Giving should be from the heart of each giver. Remember, God looks on the heart! I Samuel 16:7 ...For the Lord sees not as man sees; for man looks on the outward appearance, but the Lord looks on the heart.

What are you working on this weekend?

I have so many projects going not sure which one to work on today! I moved my work studio from one room to another and now when I am looking for something I have to stop and try to remember, where did I put that?

Moving gives me more room to actually open my sewing machine up all the way and I can now walk all the way around it! Yeah! I also have room to leave my ironing board up for pressing pieces as I go.

Designing a doll carryall for daughters BJD - This is the next size up from the little pouch I made for her size 4 1/2" BJD

I am also working on a "Cross" design for a purse

Still need to finish this one. Needs lining inside and a zipper or other closure, haven't decided how I want to close it.

Wood Cigar Boxes

I am so excited! I found wood cigar boxes locally, really inexpensive. They vary in size and weight and thickness. And I can GET MORE!

These are so wonderful to decorate and use for storage, gift giving and more! You can do altered art, mixed media, collages, decoupage and ... sooo many things!

Even the ones with paper on them are wood underneath.

I am keeping some for my self but have eight I will share for only $3 each plus actually shipping. (If you want all eight they can be shipped parcel post for $13 shipping cost) If you want just a few, each box will have to be weighed since they vary so much in size and weight.

Let's get creative! My daughter has a small jointed doll, like a Puki doll, and wanted a carry case to store it in and to take with her when traveling. So I decided to design and make one.

I have a decorative button I will be sewing on the flap. Flap has magnetic closure.

I used soft fabric and padded with quilting batting. Her pillow has rice in it.

Two pockets inside for wig and clothes

Nestled all snug in her case!

Now my daughter wants a case for the next size up ball jointed doll and then for the next size up! I think she as them from 4" up to 20" so I will be busy!

And of course it can be used for a jewelry case. One friend wants me to make one for her collection of Puki dolls so she can carry all of them with her when she travels. The one I made is about 1/4" too short for Puki dolls so I will be making another one soon.

I love Moo business cards! I made my first order about a month ago and was so excited when I got them! I ordered the regular size and the mini cards and they are so beautiful!

My bag got put on hold because we got down to 18 degrees in Central Texas (can you believe it?) and my workroom doesn't have heat. So this what I will still be working on this week. A quilted, embroidered, recycled woven handbag. The top is a vintage purse I found at a sale, the bottom is new cotton fabric that I really like because the colors are subtle, mellow and just appeal to me, plus it coordinates well with the color of the woven purse top.

It will have a lining with pockets inside. Notice the canvas bottom strip and shoulder strap, both have the embroidery on them.

One World One Heart - Last Year For This Event!

Started by Lisa of A Whimsical Bohemian. This is the last year (5th year) that Lisa will be hosting this wonderful event.

One World One Heart is a worldwide event for bloggers only. It gives all those who blog a chance to meet and mingle and form connections with those they may not have otherwise met from all over the world. In the past 4 years this event has grown to over 1,000 participants with lasting friendships (and even one love connection) formed along the way.

Think of it as a GIGANTIC open house allowing you to travel without ever leaving your home........going from blog to blog(in various countries) seeing the wonder each one has created and meeting all the fabulous people behind those blogs. What are you working on this weekend? I have been busy designing and making purses. Finally got 3 purses and a wallet finished, photographed, and listed.

I am now working on a recycled/re-purposed bag. Found a vintage woven small purse and am attaching it to a quilted, embroidered bottom with embroidered strap.

I am really late getting this posted today. I had to go to the Blood Mobile to give blood. The doctor tells me my body make too much blood, can you believe that? So instead of doing the old fashioned "bleedletting" she said go give blood! So I did and it was some what of a nightmare! Two hours they spent grilling me before taking 10 minutes to draw blood! They were very concerned that I would bleed to death or have contaminated blood!

My project for this week is another backpack. I made a "carousal horse "backpack for my six year old grand daughter and now the nine year old wants one with a "cat witch" so will be sharing pictures as we get started on it this week.

What are you working on this weekend? I have been busy designing and making purses. Have two finished and need to finish up two more I am working on.
